Camp to Prepare for Camp
If every job training is like the week I've just had, sign me up for the job market! But seriously. I was expecting to have fun with the people on camp teams after training was over for the day, but I pretty much had a great time 24/7. Even though I got roughly 5-6 hours of sleep each night due to the shenanigans that happened on a nightly basis.
Monday, we learned a lot of practical things that will be used at camp and about camp ministry. Backing up to Sunday night, I was introduced to a game called "Signs" that would later become something that we did if we even had 5 minutes of free time. My "sign" was the "three point shot" sign. Describing this game would be too difficult via blog, so I guess you'll just have to come to a week of camp. #shamelessplug
Tuesday, we learned more about recruitment and a lot of important things and FAQ's of LCU such as the 14:1 Student/Faculty ratio or the 95% job placement rate. Good stuff, that is. Starting on Tuesday and throughout the week, we would sporadically go with a photographer named Grant to get our pictures taken for promotional materials. Aka, my dream. We all became really good friends with Grant (as featured in the picture above). A man by the name of Rob Maupin also talked to us on Tuesday, and I was so inspired by him. He is super funny, interesting, and passionate about the Lord and His work.
The highlight of Wednesday was doing some team building at Little Galilee. After eating/spitting out watermelon, we played 9 square, dodgeball, and some other games. Dodgeball, of course, got really intense. We were playing a version where each team had an "VIP" and if the VIP got hit, the game was over and the team whose VIP got hit lost. Anyways, I got hit in the face by an 80 mph (just an estimated speed) throw from Isaac. Luckily for me, hitting someone in the face meant that the person that hit you got out. I ended up hitting the other team's VIP and winning the game! (This never happens to me, so I was pumped.)
After that, our teams broke up to "bond" throughout the camp. I helped Luke and Rodney do back tucks. I am definitely a future cheer coach. The music team did various flips, swung on the swing set, tossed a football around, and learned how to properly shoot a basketball (this last part was for Aly and I). Wednesday evening was spent trying out some cheerleading stunts I taught my camp team and playing Nertz at Luke Nash's house.
Friday was our review and presentation day. All the teams presented a class and their presentation of LCU. We also shared our "WIC" stories aka Why I Came to LCU. I loved hearing everyone's different background stories. That evening, we played Sardines, ate Steak n' Shake like the true college kids we are, and watched Inception. (One of my favorite movies. Definitely top five.) Or half of us watched, the other half fell asleep.
Now the question is not if LCU is ready for camp. It's if the camps are ready for LCU!

I'm not sure how to rotate this video. I really tried. But here is a backwards video of David Lucas spitting out some watermelon Enjoy. |
Thursday, we learned to teach classes for camp: these include Bible Literacy 101, God's Will, and Evangelism. Later, we learned how to baptize people and practiced on each other. This was a first for me, and I'm really glad we got to practice it. In the evening, we did a really fun shoot with Grant outside where we played games like Spikeball and Cornhole, went slacklining, threw the football around, and even faked a few studying pictures.
The slackline. Baby steps. I'll master it one day. |
Sunday (today), Luke, Aly, Rodney, and I went down to Tower Hill Christian Church to lead worship for one of their Mission Sundays. It was really neat to hear from the missionaries and from Lynn talking about LCU. There was a potluck after, and we had a chance to practice our annoying camp team practices of obnoxious accents, games, and chants/songs. It's going to be a great summer! :D
