Week 1/8: Bond Christian Service Camp!

Trudy the Van

What a great first week of camp teams! I'm struggling to figure out where I should start, but I definitely know that how we started our week was one of our favorite stories to tell the campers. It was time to pack our 15 passenger van to leave to go to Bond, and we walked outside and found a 15 passenger van unlocked, so naturally, we packed it up with all of our suitcases, music instruments, and display table items.

Lynn Laughlin pulls up in his truck. We tell him that we have named the van Trudy. Lynn looks confused and asked us if this is our van. I think we said something along the lines of "Uhhh, we think so." It turns out that we had accidentally packed Isaac Payne's van, which makes sense that I found some shin guards and tried them on. So we unloaded everything out of Trudy and into the new van Lynn brought over for us. What an interesting start to our week. We eventually named the correct van Harriet or Tubs for short.

Only a Few Injuries

I feel like there were more injuries than I'm used to, but overall, we made it through! Rodney had to fill out an accident report after slipping off a diving board at the pool. A kid got a fishing hook stuck in his leg after a bass spit it out. I smoked a kid in the face playing kickball. (In my defense, he was not paying attention. I still felt bad.) Another kid named Austin broke his finger catching a football.

Happier Things

This week was my first experience leading a family group for a camp, and I was very intimidated at first, the guys and gals in Luke and I's group were really cool (even called us Mom and Dad), but it was really great talking to them this week, playing ninja, playing Nertz, and praying for them. Bond also had a lake where the kids would swim, kayak, and paddle boat.

The theme of the week was Sasquatch and "Discovering the Truth". At the end of the week, three people got baptized. This week was an amazing opportunity to talk to people about LCU, but more importantly, God as Truth and what that means for our lives.

The moment in which I was most proud of myself (unrelated to spiritual things) was when I beat the other faculty members in a Jell-O eating contest, including a very intimidating football-player type from Ozark Christian College. I'd never done a food-related a challenge before, so I was pleasantly surprised with myself.

Of course, here are some funny pictures that our camp team took that definitely describes the chemistry of the team.
